Industrial mechanics

Industrial mechanics organize and control production processes and ensure that production facilities are ready for operation. They build machines and complete production lines, install them and put them into operation at customers’ sites. The maintenance and repair of the systems is just as much a part of this as the training of machine operators.

Details of the training

Here you can find out everything about the exciting and varied training to become an industrial mechanic. This qualified apprenticeship offers you the opportunity to learn technical skills and work in a dynamic work environment. The apprenticeship usually lasts 3.5 years and is divided into different apprenticeship years:

1st year of apprenticeship: Basics of mechanics

In the first year, trainees learn the basic skills and knowledge that are essential for the profession of industrial mechanic. This includes operating machines, working with different materials and learning technical drawings. The focus is on workplace safety and basic metalworking. Team-building measures also promote cohesion and cooperation in the group.

2nd year of apprenticeship: Deepening of skills

In the second year of training, the trainees deepen their knowledge and practical skills. They work on more complex tasks, such as assembling machines and learning control technology. This apprenticeship year will also see the IHK final exam part 1, which will check your level of knowledge and be included in the final exam part 2 (in the 4th year of apprenticeship). In addition, maintenance and repair of machines are covered. Team-building projects strengthen the sense of community and communication within the team.

3rd year of apprenticeship: specialization and projects

In the third year, trainees have the opportunity to focus on specific areas, such as quality assurance, design technology or automation technology. Particularly exciting are the assembly assignments at home and abroad, in which the trainees set up machine lines together with an experienced fitter. Practical projects and the use of state-of-the-art technologies are also in focus.

4th year of apprenticeship: Graduation and preparation for professional life

In the last year of their apprenticeship, the trainees prepare intensively for their final exams. This includes both practical and theoretical examinations (IHK final examination part 2).
